Fabric Socks (DOUBLE PERIOD) -Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn
Intimidated by the idea of making bias-cut hose but still want to
wear historically accurate fabric foot-coverings? There are a number
of surviving fabric "socks", in the sense of a foot/leg covering that
reaches only to the knee or lower. They range from 1st century wool
socks from a Gaulish cemetery, to fancy embroidered silk leggings of
the 11-13th century preserved in church treasuries, to knee-length
wool hose from 14th c. Greenland. These styles are easier to draft
and sew than full-length fitted hose and work well with knee-length
or longer garments. (Medieval art suggests they are particularly
appropriate for women, although only one of the surviving examples is
known to be a woman's garment.)
This class will survey the surviving garments, as well as artistic
depictions of similar garments, and provide diagrams of the basic
cut. Then we will draft one or more of the styles on class members
and possibly even sew some mock-ups.
All class materials will be provided. There may be a nominal charge
for handouts. Please note: there is no limit on the number of
students, but pattern drafting will be done as a demonstration only
-- not all students will necessarily get a personal pattern draft
done (although you should be able to do your own at the end of it).
